Who Could Play A Secret Set at Leeds Festival?

There is always a sense of intrigue and anticipation surrounding who could potentially play the secret set at Reading & Leeds Festival each year. Often, the secret set provides us with a decent indication of who could be playing a big slot the following year.

Last year, You Me At Six played their not-so-secret set at both Reading and Leeds and are of course set to headline the NME tent this year, but the 2017 secret set is by no means as obvious as last year.

However, we are already 99% sure of the identity of ‘The Prettyboys’, a band playing before Breaking Benjamin on the Lock Up Stage who simply do not exist. There is also a dubious-looking slot at Reading before You Me At Six’s set, which suggests at least one more surprise act is on the horizon this weekend…

In recent years we have been treated to the likes of Foals, Jamie T, Jake Bugg and Green Day, who have all played secret sets either at Leeds, Reading or both, so it has the potential to be a big name this weekend, but who could it be?

Could it be 2014’s co-headliners QOTSA who surprise fans this year? This seems the most likely option right now with Josh Homme hinting at a surprise slot at some point this year, and it appears Reading and Leeds may now be the only option left. The band are in the UK this week and have nothing scheduled for this weekend, so watch this space.

Another one of the strong rumours for a secret set is Wolf Alice, who have of course featured previously at the festivals and are heading out on another UK tour later this year. They are certainly relevant and have a few shows lined up this month which suspiciously stop in time for Saturday and Sunday…

Touted as potential future headliners following their set before Metallica on the main stage back in 2015, many believe that 2018 or 2019 could see BMTH make the move up to the top of the bill. As we said, it is often the case that the secret set goes on to play a big slot the year after, so could we be seeing Oli Sykes and co make an appearance this weekend?

During what was a drab, wash-out festival with little to cheer about at Ynot last month, Nothing But Thieves were without a doubt the shining light. With their hugely-anticipated second album coming out soon it’s a surprise not to see the band featuring on the Reading and Leeds line-up this year, so a secret appearance would not be a far shout…

Don Broco have all but confirmed themselves to be ‘The Prettyboys’ at Reading and Leeds this year, following lead singer Rob Damiani’s Instagram post of the band with that exact name as the caption. Fans of the band are certainly presuming so anyway, so will we be seeing the famous Thug Workout once again at Bramham Park this weekend? The official quiz for The Prettyboys makes it almost impossible not to be Don Broco!

Finally, could it be Brighton duo Royal Blood? This seems more wishful thinking than anything, but with the band also being dubbed as future headliners of the festival could next year be their year and a 2017 secret set be a hint for that? Maybe they need one more album at least to be considered Reading & Leeds headliners, but stranger things have happened, and that certainly doesn’t mean a secret set is off the cards!
